And the Character at Camp Award for Oregon goes to……..
In November at the 2024 American Camp Association Cascadia Conference, Camp Lutherwood Oregon was recognized with the Character Impact Award for their Compass Camp program.
The Character Impact Award recognizes one camp in each of the five states making up the ACA Northwest Region (Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington). The camps receiving this award are committed to creating spaces and removing barriers for youth to grow, connect, and learn.
These camps develop effective, creative responses to the needs of the youth using the camp environment as a teaching tool. Camps that win the Character Impact Award have a positive impact on the well-being of individuals in the camp community and foster personal growth in each camper.
The Compass Program at Camp Lutherwood Oregon
Launched in 2021 for youth impacted by Oregon wildfires, Compass has grown to now include all youth who have experienced trauma loss of a parent/family member, homelessness, illness, abuse, and much more.
Compass is designed to help youth develop skills and build resilience for navigating adverse life events. Camp Lutherwood Oregon partnered with mental health professionals to develop curriculum specifically to meet these campers where they are and to equip them with life skills, give them outdoor experiences with intentional sessions around process and trauma-informed care with lots of time for making new friends, swimming, games, hiking, archery, and all the favorite camp activities. Thanks to fundraising and grant funding, this program has been able to be offered to all campers at a sliding scale with no camper paying more than $25.
